So basically Bryant had a really great idea… What if we stopped trying to do some huge things, that we rarely accomplish, that we have to commit to for 365 days and start making smaller incremental changes for 30 days at a time? It is brilliant!!! We have decided to do this journey together through the podcast and blog and we of course invite you to join us!
I decided to create some “I am” statements that I wanted to be able to say on December 31, 2019. I wanted these statements to then determine the monthly goals. These guiding statements are:
I am Healthy
I am Calm
I am Fulfilled in my work
I am Engaged with my family, friends, social causes and in my podcast/blog community
I am Energized and Happy
I have decided to make a couple of things a year long focus and then do also do some as a once a month focus. As for the things that I am going to work on over the course of the year:
I am going to focus on one topic to study research and dive into each month, I will list the topics below with their corresponding months.
As a family we are going to make sure that we intentionally play together every week over the course of the next year. Whether it is outside, a board game, going to the park or a mini vacation we are going to make sure that we do not let a week go by where we have not intentionally played together.
I am committing to go on at least one date a month with my bride. We have been married for 16 years and we love each other more than we ever have, so why not pour some gas on the fire?!?
Below are my 12 Small Things with my study focus for each month:
January - Exercise Daily (6 of 7 days a week) and eat 1500 calories or below- Scandinavian Life
February- Wake up by 5:30 each week day- Spirituality
March- Write every day for the month- The Craft of Writing
April- Meditate 10-20 minutes everyday- Consciousness
May- Spend at least 30 minutes outside everyday- Transcendentalism
June- Social Media Fast (Only look at it 1x per week)- Judaism
July- Explore my city (Go on adventures around Birmingham)- Integral Theory
August- Cook through a cookbook for the month (Cookbook TBD)- Enneagram
September- Do a big purge of possessions- Buddhism
October- Take a personal spiritual retreat- Rumi and Ram Dass
November- 2 Night Family Camping Adventure (We have only ever done one night)- Survival
December- Commit to no work after 3pm for the month- Freebie TBD
